Fencing, Deer Fencing

Fencing Deer fencing can vary widely.

Spaced deer fencing Two parallel fences separated by a 3-4 feet, deer are reluctant to jump fencing that is both high and wide. This fencing takes a lot of space and you have to build 2 fences.

Slanted deer fencing. If deer fencing is installed at a 45 degree angle it accomplishes the same thing as a spaced deer fencing. This fence must be attached to the ground, deer are good at going under fences. The posts that hold the wires are pivoted in the center onto the post that goes into the ground.

Blind deer Fencing is fencing that the deer cannot see through or over. This is based on the idea that the deer will be reluctant to jump over fencing when it cannot see its landing area so this fencing can be a little shorter than open fencing but it still should be six feet tall.

Fencing a small area. Sometimes deer are reluctant to jump into a small area that is fenced even though the fencing is only four feet tall.

Blocking the deer’s approach A deer needs a little room to run in order to jump. By blocking the approach a fencing can be made more effective.

Seven foot tall perimeter fencing staked down at the bottom is the best deer defense but it cannot be used in many applications because tall fencing can’t be used in many applications.

Woven meshes made from plastic or metal can be used to cover plants and protect them from deer. Plants will grow up through these meshes and they are difficult and inconvenient to install and maintain. Some meshes are difficult for the deer to see and they become entangled and tear the meshes.

Electric fencing for deer Deer will often jump a short electric fence without ever touching it, so an un-baited electric fence has to be tall to be effective.

Baited electric fencing  Instead of just jumping over an electric fence, a deer will usually touch the wires of a baited electric fence. An electric deer fencing can be baited with a little peanut butter placed under aluminum foil “tents” placed over the wire. Or a slurry can be made with peanut butter which is applied to the wires using a paint roller. After touching the baited fencing and receiving a shock, deer will avoid the entire area. The sweet smelling attractant used in the Wireless Deer Fence™ deer repellent system consists of attractant perfumes (food scents) incorporated into polyethylene resin which is shaped like a small tube. These scented tubes can be attached to an electric fence wire with a small piece of bare wire to attract deer to touch the wire.

Dogs inside a fence Dogs can be kept inside a fenced enclosure or a buried invisible fence can be very effective at keeping deer out, provided the dog is of the right disposition and of sufficient size. Mule deer and other deer will not uncommonly attack dogs, at potentially great risk to the dog. Keeping two dogs together will be more effective, a deer is far less likely to attack two dogs. If a dog is kept on a tether some deer will learn to keep out of reach and ignore the barking.

Wireless electric deer fencing system. Individual posts are placed where deer will find them. Each post contains a miniaturized charging circuit with bare wire electrodes at the top. When a deer touches the sweet smelling post it receives a shock on the nose, training it to stay out of the area. This deer fencing/deer repellent /deer control system works like baited electric fencing but without any connecting wires.
