Electronic Deer Repellents that emit a super audible sound are scare-type repellents. Although they might be effective for short-term control of deer damage, scare type electronic deer repellents are not effective long term because deer become habituated to them when they discover that they are not harmed by these devices. Some electronic deer repellents will periodically change the frequency of the sound emitted but deer will still learn to ignore these devices.
Scarecrow electronic deer repellents
Scarecrow electronic deer repellents might incorporate motion, visual effects and sound. Also, the Scarecrow is a brand name for a motion activated water spraying device which can be effective.
Auditory electronic deer repellents
Loud auditory electronic deer repellents should not be used in suburban or residential areas out of consideration for neighbors - their use should be restricted to rural areas where noise is not a problem.
A radio, activated by a motion detector can also scare off deer. Pie pans or metal cans suspended by strings make noise when they rattle in the wind, and have also been used to deter damage.
Motion activated ultrasonic electronic deer repellents scare deer using high-frequency sounds which come on suddenly. These repellents do not violate noise ordinances but over time deer may become used to these sounds.
Visual electronic deer repellents include motion activated flashing or strobe lights, helium-filled Mylar and “Scare-eye” balloons that move periodically on a timer or when motion is detected
Havahart™ Electronic Deer Repellent is a device that would be better called an electric deer repellent rather than an electronic deer repellent. This device works on the same principle as a baited electric deer fence.
